Successful candidate will ideate and advance tire mechanics knowledge related to the following tire performance attributes: Force & Moment, rolling resistance, wet grip, tread wear, noise/vibration/harshness and ride /handling.  Work product will be transitioned to the product engineering group for application to specific new products and product improvements


Job Responsibilities:

  • Apply the principles of structural engineering to develop new, innovative tire designs
  • Analyze and optimize your design candidates using Finite Element Analysis and simultaneous optimization of geometry and material properties
  • Work with testing teams to study cause/effect relations between tire design and tire performance
  • Interface with manufacturing to prepare for industrialization of tire technology
  • Define project plans including learning opportunities, scoping, resources and time; plans may include multi-phased approach to progress tire technology from concept to industrialization
  • Execute project plans; organizing test program activity, designing prototypes using CAE tools, arranging for prototyping, testing/evaluation, analysis and recommending next steps
  • Full documentation of learning for eventual transition of knowledge to the Product Engineering group
  • May involve writing white papers on specific topics and/or following formal definition of project proposals
  • Ensure protection of IP when engaging externally


Basic Qualifications:

  • BS degree in Mechanical, Civil or Aerospace engineering with a specialization in structural analysis and design; BS degree in Physics also acceptable
  • 8 years or more in development with emphasis on tire mechanics, tire engineering and/or composite structures
  • Strong background in mechanics of solid materials undergoing large deformations
  • Strong background in the statics and dynamics of structures
  • Education and experience using the finite element method for structural analysis
  • Strong programming ability in Python, Matlab, Julia or other language that is suitable for scientific computing
  • High quality analytical skills with understanding of 1st principles thought process
  • Due to the nature of R&D, the individual should have demonstrated initiative, ownership, a high-energy level and possess an intellectual curiosity that enables in-depth understanding of the technical challenges.
  • Must demonstrate high levels of cooperation and coordination internally, working well with others in a matrix organization
  • Strong proven ability to document technical results and methods in the form of reports and presentations
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate complex ideas in a simple way


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Science degree in Engineering or Physics
  • Project management experience preferred
