Position Title:                                                   Research Engineer (Tire Noise, Vibration & Harshness)

Days / Hours:                                                   Monday – Friday / 7:00 am to 4:00 pm

Summary of Duties:     

 

  • Design and perform acoustic and vibration experiments in a lab and on vehicle at a test track.
  • Research, understand and explain the physics of tire noise generation; write computer programs to predict tire noise.
  • Work with the tire design engineers to develop technical knowledge of relationships between tire design and tire noise, vibration and harshness.
  • Collaborate with test engineers to develop on vehicle noise, vibration and harshness test procedures
  • Collaborate with test engineers and evaluators to develop subjective noise, vibration and harshness test procedures.
  • Assist with the simulation team in development of noise, vibration and harshness simulation tools.
  • Work with the Tire Uniformity Team to understand tire uniformity and its relation to NVH.
  • Regularly participate in technical communication with management via technical reports and presentations.
  • Work with our IT group to develop an NVH database that can store and analyze large quantities of data.

 

Qualification:

 

Master’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or similar AND 2 years of experience in the job offered or any related occupation.  Applicants must also have demonstrative experience with:

 

  • (2 years) automotive, aerospace, tire or rotating machinery NVH/structural engineering.
  • Hands-on experience setting up instrumentation, designing and conducting NVH/structural engineering experiments.
  • Acoustics and vibration theory - lumped and continuous systems.
  • Signal processing.
  • Statistical analysis of experimental data.
  • Analysis of linear systems.
  • Commercial products such as Siemens LMS, Bruel and Kjaer, National Instruments, Matlab or Python.
  • Producing user friendly GUIs.
  • Documenting technical results and methods in the form of reports and presentations.

 

Cooper Tire & Rubber Company is seeking a talented engineer to join our global tire/vehicle Noise, Vibration and Harshness (NVH) team.  As a member of the dynamic and diverse Global Technical Center (Findlay, OH), you will collaborate with internal teammates and customers in our three regional technical centers (US, China, England) to optimize tire noise and vehicle NVH.

Job Specific Duties

  • Design and perform hands-on acoustics and vibration experimental measurements
  • Research, understand and explain the physics of tire noise generation; write computer programs to predict tire noise
  • Work with the Tire Uniformity Team to understand tire uniformity and its relation to NVH; write computer programs to optimize tire uniformity

 

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Aerospace or Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or similar
  • Automotive and/or rotating machinery NVH experience
  • Hands-on experience setting up instrumentation, designing and conducting NVH experiments
  • Acoustics and vibration theory - lumped and continuous systems
  • Proficiency in signal processing
  • Experience in analysis of linear systems
  • Proficiency with commercial products such as those of LMS, Bruel and Kjaer, National Instruments, etc.
  • Proficiency with Matlab or Python including the ability to produce user friendly GUIs
  • Strong oral and written command of  the English language
  • Strong ability to document technical results and methods in the form of reports

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree
  • Experience with tire mechanics
  • Theory and application of Boundary Element Methods
  • Theory and application of Finite Element Methods
  • Subjective assessment of vehicle-tire system noise and vibration
  • Familiarity of suspension and chassis NVH issues
  • The right to work legally in the USA
